Don’t Just Lie There: Douche Something!

My day only ever goes right if I start it with a shower

Why, after all these years, does it still surprise me that my day only ever goes halfway right  if I start it with a shower?

Gawd, how I need that immediate watery purge, to wash away yesterday’s stale ruminations.

So good  as I summon these bombarding bullets of H2O to bounce the badness from my skull …

That heavenly cascade pummeling my pores … Gawd, how I knead that shampoo to lather and cleanse, and seep and scour,  as I let the water of life permeate and rinse through my psyche …

Now we’re talking a fresh start: an actual reboot, rejigging and full recalibration of thoughts and intentions.

It’s now the morning after jaded pessimism.

I am renewed and I am ready!

But if I dodge that douche, or even defer it, and start off feeling gruff and rough … that’s how my day often unfolds.

The news headlines on my phone are a vexing blur of American shootings, crass Trump tweetings, a wallow in the Brexit mire or more Sinn Fein/DUP intransigence up North … and send me scurrying to my sports stuff refuge.

But if I start showered and fresh …

I fall through the universe and end up in Lily’s world!

And what a world that is …

I can delight in her frantic good cheer, take pleasure in those yelps, licks, tail wags and whirling circles of mad devotion.

dav
Nice to see you, Lily, nice …

Rather than be overwhelmed by her effervescence, or flatly bat her affections away, I am suffused with her optimistic stardust …

Why am I such a goddam goldfish, though? … I know up-and-at-it-get-into-that-shower-now! works for me, I do it for weeks … until I don’t …

So now, even my calf muscles are moaning as I finally unfurl my weary bones and body from the bed and  try to erect them in the correct working order.

Trying to convince myself I am the better for those stolen extra minutes of shallow sleep as I rub my eyes, scratch, fart and generally just stumble into the day.

I actually feel worse, and snarl at brain’s bull about that surplus shut-eye being in the tank and I will be the better for it … later, sometime …

And 20 minutes later I’m still drooping around the kitchen.

I’ve had my poached egg on toast and coffee … Lily and Bella have been walked, fed, watered … those remaining dishes have been washed and put away … that Sunday magazine article on the countertop has reeled me in … then all those emails and tweets on my phone …

It’s still only nine in the morning … and I’m knackered!

And rudderless.

Proving yet again that if I do dodge the douche, morning is but a continued yesterday, an interruption rather than a new beginning.

I’ll do it right tomorrow …  sure it’s only a day away, isn’t it?

  1. There is something about canine optimism…doesn’t matter if you’re gone 5 minutes or 5 days, the reaction at seeing you is the same. 🙂

  3. Lily is just adorable, but yes I hear you, Max wouldn’t last five minutes in the wild, he’s too stupid. I’ve watched him chase a rabbit. I was impressed for all for five seconds, then the rabbit headed left and he went right. Absolutely clueless, poor little chap. As for me, like you, if I don’t get up and into the shower straight away, I may as well stay in bed. I just can’t function without a shower then a cuppa first thing.

  4. I guess this is why we love our canine friends so. You don’t get that kind of optimism from cats.

    Lily is ADORABLE!

    • She is utterly gorgeous … the most even-tempered, enthusiastic, friendly creature. She is the optimist’s optimist Veronica!

  5. If I’m in a rush and skip making the bed I can guarantee my day will turn to sh*t, we don;t have a dog but a hapless feline fiend. Wouldn;t change him but there’s no way he’d make it in the wild, he didn’t even stop a random cat we don;t know from entering the house and eating his food, from his bowl, at the weekend! #TwinklyTuesday

  6. Ha, I just finished reading this post and my dog (on his couch dog bed next to me) just got attacked by a fly, at which point he swivelled his head and snapped his choppers at it, very lazily.
They’re so predictable but such an essential part of the family. #AnythingGoes

    • That’s part of their charm … That dopiness has to be enjoyed and treasured. Good to know there’s something dafter than us, and loves us so – and we them😀
